Encountr 2.94 (beta) now available.

November 10th, 2011

Encountr 2.94 is now available as a beta from http://get.encountr.net/beta

Assuming no real problems are discovered on Thursday, this will become the next official release on Friday as the Eastern timezone celebrates Nerd New Year (11:11:11am on 11/11/11). Otherwise, it might not become official until Pacific Nerd New Year ;-)

What’s New?

  • Nearby guys auto-refreshes whenever you change the distance, max time, pic/no-pic, and/or age setting.
  • Whenever nearby guys refreshes, the screen now gets dimmed and becomes unselectable for about a half second to prevent you from accidentally triggering something unintended a fraction of a second after the screen gets unexpectedly updated.
  • Push notifications are now disabled by default if you’re running Honeycomb. The specific problem is that if you have a Honeycomb tablet that only uses wi-fi, and you lose wi-fi connectivity, you’ll get hit by a torrent of popup error messages unless push notifications are disabled. It’s easy to forget to disable them, and I got tired of swatting them away. I’m hoping to have the underlying bug fixed for real within another week or two, but in the meantime this will hopefully save the sanity of everyone who has a tablet. If you really, REALLY want to enable push notifications on a Honeycomb tablet, you can… just go to menu->Notifications and check “Enable Notifications”

Encountr 2.93 released!

November 3rd, 2011

I had some free time tonight, so I implemented a feature I’ve had some people requesting for a while (especially users with tablets) — more icons per row. As of 2.93, there’s a new preferences setting (Menu->Settings->Preferences: Icons per Row) that allows you to select any value between 4 (the default) and 10.

It’s not a huge change, but I’m going to be tearing into Encountr this weekend to implement a bigger new feature that might take a week or two to finish, so I decided to go ahead and release this as a new version so everyone could start enjoying it sooner.

As usual, you can download it from http://get.encountr.net/now (also available through MiKandi Market)

Remember, if you’re installing Encountr onto a WiFi-only tablet, I recommend (for now) that you disable push notifications (Menu->Notifications, un-check all 3 boxes) immediately after installing it. Otherwise, you’re going to get hit with a bunch of error dialogs telling you that “Encountr” crashed  the next time you reboot the tablet in a place where wi-fi isn’t available. Hopefully, this bug will be fixed in the thirdparty library we use for push notifications soon (they’re aware of the bug, and working on fixing it). In the meantime, if you own a wifi-only tablet, just follow these instructions, and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Encountr 2.92 released!

October 31st, 2011

Encountr 2.92 is now officially released. You can get it from http://get.encountr.net/now

What’s new?

  • Fixed a bug from 2.91 and earlier that occasionally spawned two copies of the error page that told you your profile had been pulled to another device.
  • If you forget your username or password, or you’re migrating from an old version and never SET a username or password, Encountr will now try to recognize your phone anyway. 2.81 through 2.91 would force you to get your password officially reset.
Note: I officially screwed up on Saturday. I posted 2.92, but most of the actual links that were supposed to point to it still pointed to 2.91. I’ve now fixed that.
